Can I put a Mahogany dye over Blonde highlights?

I have naturally dark brown hair, but have had many highlights put in over the years. Some are very light and others are caramely coloured. It is mostly just the top layer of hair that is dyed, all the underneath of my hair is still dark brown. I just wanted to cover this up for the time being. I have a Loreal semi perminant dye in a Mahogany colour. Will this look odd? or will the red based colour cover the blonde bits? I know that it is only semi perminant and will come out eventually but i just want to give my hair a break from all the ammonia. What is your advice? i cant offered to go to the hair dressers because i am going to egypt in january! All answers would be appreciated:)Thankyou x

I suspect that it will but it will be lighter. Blond hair because the pigment is lighter takes color easier than darker hair because your hair is most dark brown it will look nice. and you roots are going to be dark so I think it will be just fine

the highlights will get lighter and maybe in a tone that will combine mahogany.

yes but it will fade out very quickly and go to an ugly light brown yellow color.

Dont do it - your many highlights will pick up on the reds in the mahogany dye and will result in bright patches

As a hairdresser i would suggest you buy a dye with an ash tone in it - i would strongly advise against using a warm colour if you are using home dyes
